Reactions to a Dagger

Honestly, it’s 15 hours later and I’m still not quite sure how I feel about the Terps’ loss to Michigan State.  The aftermath of the game left me a bundle of disappointment, anger, sadness, and pride.

I am absolutely in awe of what this team accomplished all year, capped by an incredible comeback from 15 down with 9 minutes to play (and 9 down with 2:09 to play) to put themselves in a position to win the game.

The game was ugly, and for 39 minutes, the Terps couldn’t seem to get close enough to the Spartans to threaten them.  But then, just when all hope seemed lost, this group of players showed again that they never give up.  They managed to claw their way back and take the lead, not once, but twice, the final time with 6.6 seconds left.

Thousands of Terps fans started believing that a Sweet 16 bid was in reach, and then it was over.  The tourney run, Greivis’ college career, Hayes and Milbourne, the season, all ended suddenly with a single, desperation shot.  I still don’t know how to feel.  I do know that image of Jordan Williams sitting on the floor with his head in his hands will haunt me.  At least until next season.

Update: Mike Wise has a great article on the loss, the season, and Vasquez’s time in College Park.  It’s a great read if you’re looking to mope some more.
