Terps Lead ACC

It's a third of the way through the ACC basketball season, and don't look now, but the Terps are in sole possession of first place! With victories over FSU, BC, NC State, and Miami against only an OT loss on the road at Wake, Maryland is 4-1, leading Duke, Wake, and Virginia by half a game. Further, the last two home games have been decisive victories, in which the Terps took care of business against inferior opposition.

Of course, the other part of the story is that the Terps' victories in conference are over teams with a combined 9-16 conference record, and our first place status only has us in the tournament (according to Bracketology) as a automatic qualifier with a #13 seed. So we still have a lot of work left to do in order to accomplish any goals. The Terps' schedule only gets harder from here, starting with road games at Clemson and FSU and adding two games each with Duke and Virginia (though the Cavs' current standing is likely more fleeting than ours).

The biggest positive is that the Terps are finally winning the games they're expected to win, and not letting them be nail-biters or bad losses. Now the team can enter the harder part of the schedule with more confidence. A 10-6 ACC record only requires a 6-5 finish to the conference schedule, and that doesn't seem too ridiculous any more, but we'll keep our expectations reasonable for the moment. Progress toward being a legitimate threat starts with winning one or both of the upcoming road games.

You guys have been a good team to watch this season. If you guys keep playing well, 10-6 is easily doable.

Much better than having to watch GT play and then flip a coin as to whether we will win. I think we finish 8-8 in conference but even that is unlikely, especially with our freethrow, turnover, and road troubles.

I honestly think this is one of the best parity for the conference in years. I watched BC-Clemson and UNC-NC State yesterday and both were good games. Should be a great 5-6 weeks down the stretch and then the tourney.

Bracketology is garbage. Ken Pomeroy has us at #8 in the country (which is way too high, but it's a counterpoint to Joe Lunardi's trash).

The #8 on Pomeroy is up from about #50 when Dino came back. I have watched every MD game for a good 15 years and I would only put the 2 final four teams and the second Joe Smith Keith Booth team ahead of this one. Maybe the Steve Francis team but even that team wasn't ass good as this one because this team is so balanced. Very very pumped for the national coming out party vs Clemson on Sunday.

Hey! Nice idea, but will this really work?

Well the Tigers scratched out the eyes of the bewildered Terps. It was the worst loss since last year. It was like they walked into the gym and forgot how to play. A few three's early and the Terps never recovered. They needed this one and now FSU looms large. NC won't stay docile forever. Virginia for all the naysayers walloped them in Charlotte. Is Kansas losing in OT consolation? Is Texas losing to Baylor gona make it better? When President Obama watched the Blue Devils get creamed did it help our cause? I was stunned at how a team that looked so sharp last week looked dumb struck last night, and Clemson without their starting point. Twenty-six turn overs (nine attributable to Vasquez the team leader). The only quality game came from frosh Jordan Williams. I'd like to see coach play Padgett.

Twenty-six turn overs (nine attributable to Vasquez the team leader)....This is why the Terps no matter how good they may look in a game will not be any good this year. Vasquez is good but way to inconsistent. That normally wouldn't be an issue as other players would step up but IMO Vasquez's play doesn't allow other players to step up. He tries to carry the team every game I have seen and he isn't a Steve Fransis.

Glad to see you all leaving the band wagon so quickly. Terps played terrible, no doubt. Clemson executed the smoke a dump truck full of Meth and run around until basketball is impossible to be played within a mile of your presence radius to perfection. All that said, when MD beats FSU and pounds on UNC you ARE NOT welcome back on the bandwagon.

Can't jump the bandwagon if I wasn't ever on it. If you go back to some earlier ECB maryland topics you will see I had the same feeling about Vasquez then as I do now. Yes he is the best player on the team but him being on the team actually makes it worse because of his play style.
